PEDALLING TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DIFFERENTLY ABLED CHILDREN ...
Waterfront restaurant Den Anker, together with Jordan wine estate, cycled for a cause on Sunday the 14th of March 2011. They used the Argus Cycle Tour to raise funds for a poignant case: Marc and Jessica Bulman, a young brother and sister who are suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. This is a genetic disorder that weakens and wastes away muscles due to degeneration of the motor neurons.
Their pedal power will help give mobility specifically to Marc. Although both classified as having Type 3 SMA, their muscles have been affected differently. Jessica is fairly light and generally weak, but has retained the ability to walk short distances. Marc, heavier and stronger in his upper body, lost the ability to walk or stand about a year ago. He needs something he can spend his day in.His scooter is no longer suitable.
With every km covered, the 22 cyclists wearing Den Anker colours – who include restaurant and Jordan winery staff & friends – raised money towards the wheelchair Marc needs.
Jordan Winery also offeed a time/distance bonus to help towards the funds required for an electric chair that has the ability to manoeuvre indoors in tight spaces, but also allows Marc to ride around outside on rough terrain to play with his friends like any other little boy.
The fundraising is being run under the auspices of the Chaeli Campaign who are committed to mobilising children. A raffle was also held at Den Anker at the weekend to help create awareness of this disorder.
R55000.00 was raised and Marc's wheelchair was ordered!
He has gained his independance and is now mobile and can get around to do the things he would like to do and has become a content and confident young boy.

Easter 2010, as an unexpected treat, we distributed 300 chocolate eggs to eager children in Section C, one of the poorest sections of the sprawling township of Khayelitsha.
For the past year Den Anker staff has been involved in helping the Umanyano Lomama Support Group, which provides a haven for children at a creche in premises donated by The Church of the Nazarene. Currently 40
children from babes and toddlers to lively 6-year olds are in their care. Half are Aids orphans.
The creche premises are bleak. We use the restaurant as a 'depot' for collecting and delivering clothes, bedding and other comforts for the children, who are now facing the cold winter months with little protection.
Much to our delight American visitors to Den Anker - Barbara & Andy Habina have taken an interest in the project. Touched by the plight of the children, Andy made a private donation of money to the creche, following up this generous gesture by making a special trip to Cape Town last month with Barbara specifically to deliver goods that had been collected and made by the GFWC, the Hudson Community Club to which Barbara belongs. The Habinas brought with them money collected by schoolchildren at a the school where Barbara teaches. We are now making sure that these funds are being used to improve creche facilities. The children's sleeping area, curently cement, is to be tiled for cleanliness and easy maintenance and a ceiling will be put into the lunch area.
